Ta da! Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for a mime!

Or... not.

Or maybe...

As you'll recall, last chapter ended with Ana walking into her apartment and coming face to face with Leila. Oh my!

Leila is just standing there, holding her gun, and staring at Ana. Understandably, Ana starts freaking out, both about Leila being there and also about the possibility that she might have harmed Ethan. I was almost sympathetic, until I read this:

She tilts her head to one side, regarding me as if I'm an exhibit in a freak show. Jeez, I'm not the freak here.

OH FUCK YOU.

Leila is mentally ill, you stupid bitch. Nobody except dumbarsed thirteen year old boys call people freaks. And calling a mentally-ill, grieving, hysterical woman a freak makes you a bitch of such massive proportions that I'm tempted to get out my clue-by-four and go to town on your stupid arse.

Ana tries to attempt normal conversation, first by greeting Leila as if nothing's wrong (good move) and then asking her if she's here alone and if Ethan's there. Leila simply mutters "Alone... alone" and she's so sad that she makes Ana want to cry, at least until Ana starts wondering if Leila's alone because she hurt Ethan. Ana asks her what she's doing there and if there's something Ana can help her with, and then she offers Leila tea. Leila doesn't respond and isn't making any threatening movements.

Ana asks her if there's anyone else in the apartment. Leila says 'alone' again, and Ana hopes that it means that Ethan's not there. Leila refuses her offer of a drink, and then asks her 'What do you have that I don't?' Ana asks her what she's talking about, and Leila points out that Grey lets Ana call him Christian. Ana tells Leila that she's not Grey's sub as she is inadequate to fill the role (good move) but Leila points out that Grey is actually happy, which really isn't common. She points out that Grey's subs all looked like Ana and Leila, but Ana stands out since Grey let her sleep in his bed. Christ, she's like Edward in reverse. Leila ponders why Grey likes his subs all the same, and comments that Grey is a dark man. Ana inwardly gets pissed off because she's changed her beloved, and for fuck's sake...

OK. Public Service Announcement: Trying to change someone you loved is a Very Bad Idea. People often object to being changed, and people are not clay dolls to mould as you will. Teenage girls especially should not try this, because their partners will probably not like it at all, and as TV Tropes says, in real life, the 'I can change you' mentality has a rather large body count. Don't try it.

Ana asks if Leila can give her the gun, and Leila says that it's so 'she can join her beloved'. Ana has no idea what it means, but it's fucking scary, and she thinks Leila is going to try shooting Grey, who bursts in on cue. For a moment, Ana's terrified that Leila will shoot Grey, but she doesn't. Instead, Grey goes into Dominant Mode and mouths a command at Leila, who instantly kneels and drops the gun. Grey takes the gun and tells Ana to leave, but Ana is loath to leave Grey alone with an easily-led ex-sub who'd be happy to fulfil his every wish. Taylor takes her downstairs to Ethan, who is safe and sound (he was meeting up with a friend).

Ethan has no idea what's going on, and Ana fills him in and breaks down. She asks Taylor if the apartment was checked. It was, that afternoon in fact, but Leila's rather good at evading security teams. Ethan offers to take her out for a drink. Taylor points out that Grey wants to her to go back to his place, but Ana basically tells him to fuck off in diplomatic terms (i.e. pointing out that they don't actually need security now that they know where Leila is) and Ethan takes her for that drink.

At the bar, Ana explains the whole Leila thing, and Ethan's understandably freaked out. However, he does his best to cheer her up by talking about Barbados. Dr Flynn and a nurse arrive and take Leila with them, and then Ethan suggests that he and Ana get really drunk, so they do. Excellent move.

Much, much later, Ana gets back to Grey's place. Ethan's crashing at his friend's place, and Grey is now very pissed. Ana snaps that she wasn't sure how long he'd be with Leila, and while Grey doesn't get what she means, he's unsure what's going on. Ana asks where Leila is- a psychiatric hospital in somewhere called Fremont. She drunk-babbles about how she can't be what Grey wants, and Grey thinks that she's going to leave him. He starts freaking out, and then he goes into Submissive Mode, and the chapter ends.

That was Chapter Thirteen. Next time, there will be carnivals!

OK, maybe not.
