Character Bio: Echo
Dec. 3rd, 2011 11:20 pmHaven't done one of these for a long time. This particular character is a bit of a contradiction- he's attractive and yet simultaneously terrifying. I created him working from the base idea of 'who is the strongest psychic in the world?' and then he just grew.
Name: Jack 'Echo' Harper
Age: 50
Sex: Male
Religion: Catholic
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Country of Origin: Scotland
Power: Psychic
Personality: Charming. He hardly ever gets angry, but when he does, bad things happen. He is generous and caring to people he likes and derisive to those he doesn't; he's very manipulative and often prefers to make others do his work for him. He's amoral in that he refuses to follow or believe in society's norms and often believes that the rules don't apply to him. He's a tad narcissistic and occasionally makes remarks about his great skill and how lesser psychics weren't worthy of his teaching. One of his defining characteristics is that he always gets what he wants, whether it's through manipulation, head games or bribery. He doesn't often talk about personal matters, and while there are many people he counts as friends, only a few can say that they're close to him- and he's happy to keep it that way.
Backstory: Jack was born in Glasgow in 1961. He was the third of five children in a middle-class family and spent his childhood reading lots of books and occasionally playing with others- though he usually ended up running the games after a while. He began to attend Kindra Academy at age 13 and soon proved himself to be a very irritating student- he got top marks, but barely paid attention in class and often mocked the teachers. He had charisma in spades and managed to make himself popular in such a way that everyone wanted to be his friend and nobody was his enemy. He manipulated everyone in ways that suited him, effectively playing puppet-master with an entire school for his own amusement.
Despite having psychic power in spades, Jack made it a point to never use it on his schoolmates, mainly because doing so would be against the school rules, and so he could brag that he was just that charismatic. He was a ladies' man from an early age and, while never having a relationship that could be called meaningful- or long-, he never lacked company. Jack's only problem was that at the time, Kindra did not have any psychic teacher whose power measured outside the norm- the teachers there were perfectly capable with dealing with the other students, but Jack's power outweighed theirs massively, and he knew it.
After leaving, he sought out the world's best psychics, one at a time, and learned from them all until he was satisfied. After that, he got married and became a teacher at Kindra, hoping that he'd find other gifted students to teach. Over the next ten years, he continued to teach, but found nobody who was anywhere close to the level of power he wanted to find. However, after ten years, his wife, Eva, died, and after taking a short break, Jack returned to teaching. One of his coworkers drew his attention to a student named Julian Reynolds, who he believed was a better psychic than the others. A quick examination revealed that the coworker was right- Reynolds was indeed highly skilled, he just hadn't realised it. Jack taught him everything he knew, and after Reynolds told him of his intentions to become a teacher, Jack gladly retired and moved to Los Angeles, where he lived a normal life.
And there you have Jack. In case anyone's wondering, his name is indeed a reference to Mass Effect 2- I saw more than a few similarities between him and The Illusive Man. If you're wondering why his nickname is 'Echo', it's because the top 26 psychics are given codenames by the psychic community, on a basis of 'this name isn't in use, you can have it'.

To sum up why he scares me: this is a man who always gets what he wants, and he can make you want to give it to him, no matter what it is- and he doesn't even need to use his powers. This is a man who could take over the world and wouldn't consider it to be hard; the only thing stopping him from becoming a man of mass destruction is that he finds it boring.
Yeah.
