Oct. 28th, 2011 06:35 pmSo, I've been thinking. (No jokes, please.) A few days ago,
chelonianmobile posted on her journal about an idiot who thought he saw a UFO and it turned out to be the moon. I swear I didn't make that up. Anyway, I wondered how anyone could think that, and she suggested that he was a city guy who never saw the country.
And then I remembered some really, really irritating conversations I've had in the past.
Australia is a beautiful country. Not just the beaches and coasts. I love the country, even when it's dead rock and bleak dirt. I love the scenery and the mountains and the hills and the freedom. And I know a lot of people who've never been there. They'll tell me gleefully that they've been to Cairns and Perth and Adelaide and Brisbane and Melbourne and Canberra and Darwin and Hobart, but they've never been to the country.
I mean, Jesus, people. The world does exist outside of the cities.
Take me as a contrast. I grew up in Sydney, sure, but I've been going to places like Dubbo ever since I was a baby. I've been to most of NSW and all over Victoria. (In contrast, I've never been west of NSW/Victoria or north of Port Macquarie). But I've seen so much of what the country offers. I've climbed the Warrumbungles, walked around Muogamarra, been around the Blue Mountains, panned for gold at Sovereign Hill and been through Bendigo. It's a tiny piece of Australia as a whole, but it's more than most people I know have seen. And that's just fucking depressing. I mean, I know not everyone has a reason to go or the ability to- but would it kill you to try the Blue Mountains? Please?
And to everyone who believes it's not worth it- you're a fucking idiot.
